Water is the single most important nutrient! We could go days without food, even weeks! But we would not last more than 3 days without water, unless you’re a superhero. We often overlook how important it is for our body’s well being to be well hydrated, it depends on it to survive! Water is crucial for health, growth, development and for nutrient absorption. Please grab yourself a glass of water and read on.
The human body is composed of up to 60% water and the heart, brain and lungs are between 70-85% water each! Considering how much the body is made up of water is just a little hint of how important it is to ensure we are getting adequate hydration daily. In order for all your cells, organs and tissues to work at optimal they require WATER! How important is this balance? Well, just as much as a 2% drop in body water can cause effects of dehydration including immediate damage to your mental abilities. Dehydration causes the brain to shrink! And we do not want that beautiful mind and smart brain shrinking! The shrinkage can impair neuro muscular coordination, decrease concentration. slow thinking, affect memory and concentration.
We are constantly loosing water by sweating – more so if you are physically active, breathing, yes breathing and going to the wash room number 1 and number 2. When the weather is hot you loose water quicker than you normally would and the heat also draws moisture right from your skin. If you are vomiting or have diarrhea this can also cause rapid water loss.
Sign of dehydration
- dry mouth
- heart palpitations
- yellow-dark coloured urine or decreased urine
How much water should I drink a day?
WELL! It’s an easy question without an easy answer. According to my research it is always recommended to follow the 8 by 8 rule; 8 glasses, 8 ounces each glass. That is about 1.9 litres. Is this enough? Maybe! It’s not really a recommendation though because it really depends on many factors. I would personally opt for more than that! Personally I drink about 3 litres a day. It really depends on the climate you live in, how physically active you are, how much you sweat, how much alcohol or coffee you drink, amongst other reasons. TIP: Coffee is a diuretic and our bodies are able to retain most of the water from this caffeinated beverage BUT as a rule of thumb for every 1 cup of coffee opt to have 2 cups of water to replenish. I could write a whole post on just COFFEE, hmm.. maybe I will! Stay tuned 🙂 Anyhow, see how you feel drinking just 8 glasses in a day and increase by a glass a day to find your happy balance. Remember staying hydrated also keeps your insides and your skin glowing! Asides from drinking water there are other ways of staying hydrated…
