What are some of the first things YOU do when you wake up? Maybe you get up and go to the wash room, maybe you go make a coffee or do 100 push ups! We all have different morning routines.

A glass of lemon water is a part of my morning regime everyday, on an empty stomach shortly after I wake up. I have done this for years just because I had repeatedly heard it was good for you but didn’t truly recognize it’s importance until I did research!

Here are some of the many reasons why a glass of lemon water is recommend upon waking:

  • Increases alkalinity 

Once lemon juice has been metabolized in the body and the minerals are in your bloodstream, it becomes alkalizing. Alkalizing means it raises the pH of your body, a pH higher than 7 is considered alkaline. What’s important to look at is not the pH of the food when it is in it’s natural state but the effect it has on the body once ingested!

  • Detoxifying 

The liver is super busy and has many important jobs to do to keep you glowing! One of those jobs is detoxification of the body. There is an antioxidant in the lemons called d-limonene which has been shown to activate enzymes in the liver. So lemon water stimulates the liver to increase the production of the livers detoxifying enzymes so it can detox and cleanse!

  • Cleanses and strengthens the liver

During sleep our bodies are regenerating and restoring therefore the liver is very active at night. Supplying the body with water especially lemon water in the morning will help stomach acid production – which helps wit heartburn and stimulate bile which brings us to our next point.

  • Stimulates bile

What is bile? Bile is an alkaline fluid that aids the body in digestion, is secreted by the liver then stored in the gallbladder. Lemon juice stimulates the liver’s secretion of this bile. Bile just like fibre is a carrier of toxins and eliminates them via bowel movements. If you have a bowel movement after drinking lemon water, you are probably eliminating waste! Woohoo! Team BILE! Haha!

  • Helps digestion 

After a full nights sleep you have fasted that is why breakfast is important to break that fast. And lemon water in the morning aids in digestion therefore reducing constipation and bloating, before eating. It increases the production of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and HCI helps you digest protein. It has been shown that the acidic nature of lemon juice suppoprts an optimal acidic environment in your stomach.

  • Immune system booster

Lemons contain vitamin C and this vitamin is known to boost your immune system strength. Having it first thing in the morning gives yours body a chance to absorb this vitamin. You should wait about 20 minutes after you have your glass of lemon water to have breakfast or your coffee or anything else.

  • Glowing skin

Giving the body a little detox boost and improving digestion can lead to better skin. Lemons also contain vitamin C which is a collagen booster! Collagen keeps the skin smooth.

How I drink my lemon water in the AM

Squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a glass or mason jar with about 500 ml of room temperature or warm water. Your water should look a little foggy from all the lemon juice and it is also important to use fresh lemon rather than bottled lemon juice. Bottled lemon juice lost valuable enzymes but also the anything acidic should never be in plastic! It is also recommended to drink through a straw because the acidity can have negative effects on tooth enamel. Warm water is important because hot water partially destroys the enzymatic properties of the lemon and cold water effects the digestive benefits.

You can add juice of a lemon also to your green tea, lemons enhance the absorption of antioxidants in green tea! GLOWMAZING

They also boost mineral absorption so if you are having a fruit or vegetable with your brekkie, then you will have better absorption of minerals in the meal.

Warm lemon water is a natural energizer because it hydrates and oxygenates the body. When the body gets this kind of glow it leaves you feeling refreshed and revitalized. Whereas starting the day with a coffee could be the opposite because it’s effects are short lived.
